Through interaction, information and inspiration, support groups provide cancer patients and their loved ones with a confidential and comforting environment. They give the opportunity to share personal experiences, obtain useful information, and listen to the ideas and advice of those in similar situations. The gatherings are a place where no one is judged and true empathy exists. The meetings are not filled with melodramatic “victim” stories. To the contrary, many patients find this unconditional support serves as a vital resource and healing tool. Participants have found the support groups helpful in easing stress, developing coping skills, enhancing their physician-patient relationship, and discovering ways to maintain a sense of purpose through this difficult journey.
